Hi, I'm Kat.

I'm a freelance web developer currently living in the Bay Area.

I'm interested in exploring the intersection of art and technology, mentoring women in engineering, and figuring out how we can use computers to build a better world.

What I Do

I work with most of the popular web technologies and frameworks: Rails, Django, WordPress, JavaScript, etc. I've dabbled in a lot of stuff and love learning new languages, libraries and tools.

Recent projects have included:

  • A JavaScript-based frontend that graphed data retrieved from a backend with a REST API. Built using Rickshaw and d3.js.
  • Extracting the Rails site from a combination WordPress/Rails hybrid site.
  • A WordPress site for a photography magazine, which required a shopping cart plugin, custom taxonomies and theming, and an online subscription manager + paywall.

I have a M.S. in Computer Engineering and a B.S. in Computer Science, with a minor in photography.

I've been working as a programmer for 8 years, and have worked at some neat places, including Columbia University's Center For New Media Teaching and Learning.

  2. I volunteer with the SF SPCA.
  3. I study Japanese.
  4. My bike is my primary form of transportation.
  5. I grew up in New Mexico: home of Roswell, the Very Large Array, the Balloon Fiesta, and the best green chile on earth.
  6. I like to geek out about football.
  7. I completed NaNoWriMo in 2004.
  8. As a kid, I learned to read before I learned to tie my shoes.
  9. Green tea is my morning beverage of choice.
  10. I love logic puzzles, word games and puns.
